WHAT IS SOLAR LENTIGO?

Solar lentigo (aka liver spots) is a type of lentigo, a skin condition that is caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This skin condition is common among people over the age of 40, but younger people can develop it, too. UV radiation causes pigmented cells (melanocytes) in the skin to multiply. Solar lentigo can appear on the face, hands, shoulders, arms and other areas of the body that get a lot of sun exposure. Over time, the spots caused UV radiation may grow.

Lentigo causes flat brown, tan or black spots to appear on the body. These spots may rounded or uneven edges.

WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS?

Exposure to UV radiation is the main cause of lentigo, but you may be more likely to develop this condition if you:

  • Get a lot of sun exposure or have had several sunburns
  • Have fair skin
  • Have had radiation therapy or phototherapy
  • Use tanning beds

In some cases, an inherited syndrome may also cause lentigines.
