What IS Cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy is a treatment using liquid nitrogen to remove precancers, skin tags, warts, seborrheic keratosis, solar lentigo and skin growths by freezing them. Sometimes it can take 2-3 treatments before it clears.
What Can I Expect During Treatment?
Liquid nitrogen is extremely cold. When sprayed on the skin, the top layer rapidly freezes. When you leave the clinic, the freezing site will probably be red and swollen, and it may sting and itch as it thaws. Expect the site to feel like a bug bite. It may look worse over the next few days before it gets better. Swelling and/or blistering often develop within a day after treatment. 2-3 days after treatment, a scab will probably form which will then take 7-10 days to fall off, leaving a smooth pink area.
Absolute contraindications (reasons Not to get this procedure)
- You have a lesion for which tissue pathology is required
- Your lesion is located in an area with compromised circulation
- You have melanoma
- You are unable to accept possibility of pigmentary changes
- You have a proven sensitivity or adverse reaction to cryosurgery
- You suffer from sclerosing basal cell carcinoma or recurrent basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma, particularly when located in a high-risk area (e.g., temple, nasolabial fold)
Relative contraindications (reasons you should probably Not to get this procedure)
You suffer from:
- Cold intolerance
- Cold urticaria
- Collagen disease or autoimmune disease
- Concurrent treatment with immunosuppressive drugs
- Cryoglobulinemia
- Heavily pigmented skin lesions located in pretibial areas, eyelid margins, nasolabial fold, ala nasi, and hair-bearing areas
- Multiple myeloma
- Pyoderma gangrenosum
- Raynaud’s disease
We recommend that you clean the area with soap and water daily and apply antibiotic ointment like Bacitracin until it heals. If this area is exposed to dirt, sweat, irritation from clothing, or picking, cover daily with a bandaid.
