Sometimes, technology’s wonders go beyond what we have expected them to be. Several service choices in the market are designed for specific skin issues, and some are for more than one skin issue. But the point here is, no matter what flaw is taking away your confidence, the chance to bring it back is within your reach. If you are one to struggle with uneven pigment and broken blood vessels, then Photofacial might be the perfect treatment for you! Care enough to know about the procedure? We got you!

What is Photofacial?

The famous photofacial uses an intense pulse light (IPL) laser to address pigment issues such as sun damage, brown spots, Rosacea, and red spots. The laser’s bright light penetrates through the epidermis to drag out pigment-producing cells to distribute the uneven pigment. Professionals can use IPL photofacials in the neck, face, shoulders, arms, chest, legs, and most body parts. The treatment can also address spider veins and broken blood vessels.

Am I a Good Candidate for Photofacial?

Unfortunately, not everyone can be a suitable candidate for a photo facial. Suppose you suffer from melasma and are very tan. In that case, you are not a good candidate for the procedure because as light rays of the treatment are attracted to pigment, darker skin tones can become discolored, and melasma patches have the potential to become darker.

What is the Procedure for Photofacial?

With the intense pulse light of photo facial, the light energy converts into heat energy which destroys the melanin-producing cells and allocates it to pigmented areas. Your brown spots will scatter to the skin surface, which will eventually flake off and reveal outstanding results.

During the treatment, your provider will first clean your skin and remove any makeup (if you are treating your face). After this, they will apply a cool gel to your skin that will enhance the effects of the light waves. There will be grid-like patterns which your provider will move the laser through.

The treatment is not painful; however, there could be slight discomfort. According to clinics, their patients testify that the pain is similar to a rubber band snapping against their skin. The light is very bright, which can be bothersome for those who have light sensitivity.

The treatment time will depend on the number of areas you and your provider mutually decide to treat, but the average beauty treatments usually take up to 45 minutes.

After the photo facial treatment, your provider will clean your face and remove the gel. You may notice that your skin is red and puffy, but the downtime is minimal. You can go back to doing daily activities, and you can also apply makeup. Your provider will ask you to avoid sun exposure for at least a week, or if you cannot, wear sunblock when you go out.

The results of the treatment are gradual and improve over time. You can see full results after three months. However, to achieve the results you desire, you also need to help yourself maintain them. Consistent sun protection and skincare are your best lines of defense. It would also be best to keep in mind that sunburn will be your enemy because this can have the potential to bring back old freckles, spots, and dullness.

Several dermatologists recommend you to take 3-5 treatments four weeks apart to get optimum results.

What skin issues can Photofacial treat?

As mentioned earlier, some skin treatments do not necessarily adhere to skin issues. Photofacial, for example, is excellent for uneven pigments. However, it can also treat other skin issues, and we will break it down for you.

  • Sun damage – The sun is a vital part of the survival of living things. However, it can also be dangerous to human skin, especially when extensively exposed. The UV light or the ultraviolet rays that the sun carries can damage your skin and eventually lead to worse skin problems such as dark spots, wrinkles, sunburn, and sun damage that photo facial addresses. A study suggests that ultraviolet exposure causes 80% of your skin aging. You can wear sunblock to shield your skin from the sun, but make sure it is SPF 50 or more.
  • Brown spots – Brown spots are also known as liver spots, age spots, and sometimes solar lentigines. Like sun damage, ultraviolet light is the primary culprit for this skin problem. They come in various colors and sizes and may appear on the face, shoulders, hands, arms, and areas most exposed to the sun.
  • Rosacea This common skin problem causes flushing or blushing, making blood vessels on your face visible. Rosacea can also create tiny, pus-filled bumps and are usually mistaken for acne. Anyone can suffer from Rosacea, but middle-aged white women are more likely to suffer from it. Photofacial is best in reducing Rosacea’s signs and symptoms.
  • Red spots -Red spots can be a tricky skin condition because they may look harmless at first. These spots may be from an allergic reaction, infection, or inflammatory process and can appear on various body parts. However, red spots are not always harmless; they can also signify a more severe disease like leukemia.
  • Spider veins – Spider veins are tiny dilated blood vessels usually found in the tip of the nose, nostrils, cheeks, and front of the ears. Aging can be a factor in possessing spider veins because as we grow older, our skin becomes translucent, revealing more of our veins. Genetics can also be a factor, and sun damage could worsen the skin condition. They are usually not noticeable compared to varicose veins. However, we understand that some of you want to get rid of it, so photo facial is the answer!
