What exactly is dermal filler?

Lips have been a hot topic over the last several years ever since Kylie Jenner had a noticeably plumper pout. How does one achieve this look? The answer is dermal filler. Not only does dermal filler plump lips, it smoothes skin and can be used in the cheeks, tear troughs, nasal labial fold, and also help pronounce ones jawline. Dermal filler will also contour facial features that have lost their fullness due to aging, sun exposure, weight loss, or illness. Many people get confused between Botox and dermal filler, which is a neurotoxin that essentially relaxes the muscles to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Dermal Filler actually fills the skins tissue to make it more plump and smooth. Most fillers, including Juvederm and Restylane, use hyaluronic acid in the product because of its ability to store moisture. These types of dermal fillers are more popular because it stimulates collagen production while lasting up to 6-9 months, or until the body gradually and naturally absorbs the particles. Dermal filler is FDA approved and very safe when done by a highly trained and licensed professional. If you want to restore a bit of youthful plump without undergoing a surgical treatment, dermal filler will be one of your best options.

Dermal Filler

Gentle Lip Enhancement before and immediately after Juvederm Ultra Plus By Tara Delle Chiaie @ DCCM.

How do I know which dermal filler is best for me?

There are so many different types and brands of dermal filler that it can make it confusing when seeking for the right treatment plan. Finding the right one will depend on your budget and your individual skin concerns. At DCCM, we offer a variety of dermal fillers that will best suit your aesthetic goals. We offer Juvederm Ultra XC, and Juvederm Volbella XC, which are used mainly for lips and as a subtle correction work. Juvederm Voluma XC is used to instantly add volume to the cheek area, chin and jaw line which will help restore contour and give you a more youthful profile. Juvederm Vollure XC is mainly used on the lower face to help with the appearance around the nose and mouth, making your skin smoother and adding structure and volume to the tissue. DCCM also carries Restylane products, which are FDA approved for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as cheeks, lips, and smile lines. We highly suggest getting medically assessed by our Master injector Tara Delle Chiaie, MSN, FNP-BC, APRN prior to getting treated.

What should I expect during treatment?

Here at DCCM, we recommend all patients to be consulted with the owner of our practice and Master Injector, Tara Delle Chiaie. Tara will assess the area and determine the level of correction necessary to achieve the optimal result. This may involve using one to several syringes depending on the patients aesthetic goals. All patients are required to fill out paperwork and consents prior to getting treated. Once paperwork is completed, patients should expect to get their pictures taken to document your progress. This is for medical reasons only, unless stated otherwise. Patients will then be escorted to one of our treatment rooms where a staff member will topically numb the area being treated to reduce the discomfort of the dermal filler injection. The topical numbing cream will stay on the treated area for about 20-30 minutes, and will be removed thoroughly with a facial cleansing.  Tara will then review with you the treatment plan and then begin to perform the treatment.  The process takes about 20-30 minutes, depending on the area getting injected and the quantity of product to be used. Dermal fillers are injected into the skin with a very fine needle or cannula and the results are immediate.  Even though you have immediate results your skin will continue to smooth and soften over the next month.

What should I expect after treatment?

After getting treated with dermal fillers, there are a few  common side effects that patients experience. Patients may experience post treatment discomfort, swelling, redness, lumpiness, and bruising, which generally will subside within a few hours to days. Bruising may last up to two weeks depending on the patients healing mechanism. We do offer Auriderm, which is a post-op gel to help improve the appearance of bruises, for patients to purchase at checkout. Dermal filler does last for about 6-18 months or longer if using Volume XC.   Follow-up or touch up treatments may be needed to maintain the full effects. Depending on the patients aesthetic goals, we recommend patients to rebook when they feel is necessary to achieve their desired result.

It is of utmost importance when seeking to get injected to work with a licensed medical professional. When seeing someone without the experience or training, it increases your risk for complications and a botched job. Tara makes safety her top priority and strives to do the best job that she can. With her years of training and experience, your time here at DCCM will not be forgotten.
