WHAT CAUSES WARTS?
Warts are small, benign growths that are typically hard, bumpy, or rough in texture and grow faster than normal skin. Their appearance may look similar to a callus or a solid blister that is brown or flesh-colored. A wart is typically painless, but it may be unpleasant to look at and deal with. If they grow in a spot where you regularly apply pressure, like the bottom of your foot, they may cause minor discomfort or pain.
A wart is caused by an infection of the human papillomavirus (HPV) and even though they’re relatively harmless, they’re contagious and spread by skin-to-skin contact. They can occur anywhere on the body, most commonly on the hands, feet and genitals.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
A common wart (also known as verruca Vulgaris) can grow on the fingers, on the backs of hands, and around the nails. They can have black dots that look like seeds (and are often called “seed” warts). They often feel like rough bumps. Foot warts (plantar warts) have similar characteristics, but they can grow in clusters on the soles of the feet. They will often feel as if you have a pebble in your shoe. Flat warts can occur anywhere and are usually smaller and smoother. Filiform warts often grow quickly around the mouth and on the eyes and nose. They look like long threads or thin fingers that stick out.
