What is Botox and is it safe?

Botox has become widely popular throughout the world and is in high demand in the aesthetic and medical industry. However, what exactly is Botox? Botox is a neurotoxin extracted from Clostirdium botulinum, which is an organism found in the environment that is natural, inactive and nontoxic. This bacterium can be found in soil, lakes, forests, or even in the intestinal tracts of mammals and fish. Botulinum toxin can be injected into the skin in extremely small doses and performs by stopping signals from the nerve cells reaching the muscles, thus it paralyzes the underlying muscles. In other words, botulinum toxin causes minimal abnormal muscle contraction. Yikes, that might sound scary but guess what; Botox is considered to be a safe treatment and is used widely throughout the medical community.

Before Botox After Botox

Where can Botox be used on the body?

Botox is predominantly used as a treatment to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Typically, botox injections treat the crows feet, or wrinkles that appear at the outer corner of the eye; glabella, or frown lines that appear between the eyes; and forehead furrows. It may shock some but Botox can also be used to treat an array of medical conditions. This includes chronic migraines, excessive sweating, overactive bladder, or neck spasms. The list is not limited to just those conditions, as Botox is currently treating over 20 muscular conditions.

What should I expect during treatment?

When getting a Botox treatment done at DCCM, all new patients are required to complete a medical history form and sign consents prior to the actual treatment. After paperwork is filled out, Tara will take time with you to discuss your goals and budget for your Botox treatment.  Tara takes great pride in cleanliness, so patients should expect the staff to clean your face before getting injected. The procedure itself is quick and painless.  Many patients come in to get treated and go back to work immediately after. There is no downtime needed.

How long does Botox last?

After treatment, you may start to notice the Botox kick in within 24-72 hours. The treatment is very individualized for when you start to notice change. However, it will take up to two weeks for the treatment to be in full effect. We will not see patients for a follow up before the two week mark to administer more Botox. This is because it takes a full two weeks for the Botox to complete its effect and to treat ahead of the two weeks could result in too much Botox.  We are happy to see all of our clients to review the results and touch up should that be needed after the two week mark.  The effects of Botox injections are temporary, so we recommend patients to come every three to four months.

It is of utmost importance when seeking to get injected to work with a licensed medical professional. When seeing someone without the experience or training, can increase your risk for complications or less than desired results.  Tara makes safety her top priority and strives to do the best job that she can. With her years of training and experience, your time here at DCCM will not be forgotten.
